The benefits of effective phonics teaching English - Phonics The government’s decision to move away from publishing a full Letters and Sounds programme, or an updated progression has put schools and experts in charge of phonics delivery. With the validation process due to be completed by Spring 2022, the question for schools around whether to stick with their own SSP programme or move to one of the validated schemes, is one many schools are going through right now.

Considerations for moving to a new phonics scheme Some of the considerations around investing in a new phonics scheme are teacher training, support and how resources schools currently use would align to a new scheme, or if this will require a heavy investment - posing the consideration of whether to hold off from buying phonics resources. The great news is, you don’t need to make any drastic changes to the resources you currently use. If you are using high-quality phonics provision, based on the Letters and Sounds progression, you can continue to use your resources. How to strengthen your phonics teaching with resources If, however, you are looking to strengthen the resources you use to support the teaching of phonics, looking for materials that feature all of the 42 sounds will mean they can be used with both your current scheme, or if you decide to follow a new scheme. As the sounds can be combined to create CVCC words, CCVC words, adjacent consonants and polysyllabic words, this makes them universal to all schemes.

The benefits to children of effective phonics teaching Synthetic phonics has been the required method of teaching early reading and writing skills since the 2006 Rose Report. The benefits of a synthetic approach are: • Teachers have a clear structure for planning and assessing, to ensure progression and coverage. • Learning in an order which is well thought-out and progress through stages as they are ready. • Children can attempt new words working from sound alone. Children that have a secure understanding of phonics benefit from this throughout their schooling. Young children who are acquiring new reading skills every day are able to develop an interest in reading through their increased confidence and ability. Whereas competent readers are able to explore meaning and understanding of texts through comprehension.
